The 10 EVs Driving America’s Sales Comeback in Second Quarter of 2026
Electric vehicle sales posted their first quarterly improvement in the U.S. for the first time in 9 months. According to a recent report from Cox Automotive, Americans bought 247,226 EVs between April and June 2026, up nearly 15% from the first three months of the year, and a 6% increase from the final quarter of 2025. Second quarter 2026 sales volume now stands as a high water mark for the industry in a post-Clean Vehicle Tax Credit world.
The Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, a provision of the Biden administration’s landmark Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, allowed qualified EV buyers to claim a $7,500 federal tax credit. Originally set to expire in 2032, the program was slated for early termination when the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act was signed into law. Under the new terms, EVs sold after September 30, 2025 are no longer eligible for tax incentives.
As the sunset of federal subsidies loomed, EV sales surged in the third quarter of 2025, hitting an all-time high of 437,487 units in the United States. Over the following six months, quarterly EV unit sales volume fell 46% and 51%, respectively, from the historic peak. Now, due in part to surging demand for certain EV models, quarterly sales volume in the segment is on the rise once again.
Using data from the 2026 Q2 Electric Vehicle Sales Report from Cox Automotive, Climate Crisis 247 identified the vehicles driving the second quarter EV comeback. We ranked all EVs on the market in the U.S. on the change in unit sales between the first and second quarters of 2026. Only the 10 models with the highest absolute increase in unit sales are listed.
