Southwest Airline Gives Up On Green Plans

Southwest Airlines had an ambitious climate goal. It has had sustainable fuel operations and a renewable energy business, but according to The New York Times, it has downsized or eliminated these.
The Times reports, “The airline is also eliminating a newly created team that makes investments in renewable fuel startups. That team is being given a couple of months to help unload SAFFiRE Renewables, a company that Southwest acquired just 11 months ago.”
Like BP
The move echoes those made by several other companies recently. A case in point is BP, which just dropped one of the largest corporate renewables operations in the world. Pressured by outside investors, BP’s board will make capital investments in fossil fuels, which will take it back into the future.
Private Sector
The private sector’s drop in renewable energy commitments is part of a double blow. The current administration has decided to drop virtually all its support for wind energy and reverse former plans to help solar and EVs.
The idea that the US will work to lower greenhouse gas emissions has essentially disappeared. Southwest, in comparison to BP, is a small company, but its decision is symbolic.
