US EV Sales Reach 1.3 Million

There were 1.13 million EVs sold in the US. The figure is not impressive given that the total number of new cars sold was over 16 million. And, hybrids outsold EVs with total 2024 sales of 1.9 million. Some were plug-in hybrids. Additionally, it is forecast that EVs will be 10% of all new car sales in 2025 compared to 8% this year.

While the EV figures continue to rise, the rise is very models. And Tesla owns about 50% of all new EV sales in the US. This makes it unlikely that major auto companies that hold 5% to 8% of the market can make money. This is particularly true because of their legacy infrastructure costs and labor expenses.

US EV companies, excluding Tesla, have almost no access to the Chinese market, which is the largest EV market by far. China’s EV sales are almost exclusively based on sales made by Chinese EV companies.

Chinese EVs

The US market might well be awash in Chinese EVs. Many are high quality and have price points, in many cases, below $20,000. The media price of a new EV in the US is over $50,000. Only high tariffs keep the Chinese out of the US. If these tariffs were lowered GM and Ford, in particular, would be in deep trouble financially.

EV market share would rise more quickly in the US, if the Chinese manufacturers could import their models.
