While abnormally high temperatures this year may dash many a dream of a white Christmas, December 25th is historically one of the snowiest days of the year. Christmas Day currently holds the record as the snowiest day of the year in 31 counties.

In some counties, Christmas snowfall has been truly miraculous. In Refugio County, Texas, for example – where it will be 72°F degrees on Christmas this year, it snowed 9.5 inches on December 25, 2004, setting a record for the county. Some counties farther north have received more than four times that on Christmas Day. A look at NOAA data reveals the snowiest Christmases ever.

To determine the snowiest Christmases ever, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on one-day snowfall totals from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. Counties were ranked based on historic one-day snowfall for December 25. Only counties where Christmas Day holds the current record for greatest one-day snowfall totals were included.
