‘Haboob storms’ Are Sweeping Through the Southwest, Leaving These 25 Cities Covered in Dust

This week, intense thunderstorms in the Southwest created a series of haboobs – high walls of dust – that swept through major metros in the area. The dust storms exposed millions to dangerous particulate matter, and forced a Phoenix airport to temporarily halt flight activity.

While the dust storms settle, dozens of major cities are left with unsafe levels of particulate matter concentration. No amount of particulate matter is safe to breathe, and in cities spanning at least three states the concentration of vertical dust is more than one microgram per cubic meter of air. A closer look at the data reveals the cities with the highest concentrations of dust right now.

To determine the cities with the highest concentrations of dust right now, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on current dust concentration from the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the average concentration of vertical dust as of August 28, 2025. Zonal statistics were calculated using Census Bureau boundaries in GIS. Only cities with at least 25,000 residents were considered.
