Nor’easter and Alaskan Typhoon: See Where Flooding Is the Worst Right Now

This week, several extreme rainfall events are causing widespread flooding, air travel disruptions, and injuries throughout the United States. An East Coast nor’easter washed out roads and caused coastal flooding in a number of populous cities, while remnants of a typhoon caused catastrophic flooding in western Alaska, destroying entire homes and leading to more than a dozen reports of missing persons.

The NOAA maintains a network of more than 10,000 river gauges regularly observing water and streamflow conditions throughout the country. As of Tuesday, more than 20 river gauges are exceeding flood stage thresholds. While some of the most severe flooding is in coastal communities in Florida and North Carolina, tidal waters in Bethel, Alaska are currently more than five feet above flooding stage. A closer look at the data reveals the places where flooding is the worst right now.
To determine the places where flooding is the worst right now, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on river gauge observations from the NOAA’s National Water Prediction Service. River gauge locations were ranked based on current flood stage exceedance, or the difference between current water height and flood stage thresholds as of October 14, 2025. River gauge locations were matched to places using nearest neighbor analysis. Supplemental data on home value and population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
