The US Cities With The Worst Air to Breathe Right Now

There are currently several severe degradations in air quality impacting large, populated pockets of the country. In several major cities, concentrations of particulate matter are far beyond the safe threshold of 35 micrograms per cubic meter of air over a 24-hour period.

In the Pacific Northwest and parts of California, smoke from wildfires are raising particulate matter concentrations to dangerous levels. In Arizona, high winds and loose dust are driving up PM2.5 figures. And while the worst air to breathe right now is mostly concentrated in the West, some parts of the Midwest are experiencing air quality anomalies. A closer look at the data reveals the cities with the worst air quality right now.
To determine the cities with the worst air to breathe right now, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on particulate matter concentration forecasts from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database. Cities were ranked based on average 24-hour PM2.5 concentration within their boundaries as of October 8, 2025. Spatial averages were calculated using zonal statistics in QGIS, and are based on Census Bureau boundaries. Only cities with at least 35,000 residents were considered.
