Healthcare Becomes Major Global Polluter

If the healthcare industry were a nation, it would be the world’s fifth largest polluter based on carbon emissions. As is the case with most major polluters, there is no short term, to change that.
No Harm reports, “The top three emitters, the United States, China, and collectively the countries of the European Union, comprise more than half the world’s total health care climate footprint (56%).” The more advanced the medical care, the larger the emission. On a per capita basis, the US emissions are 57 times those of India. China’s absolute total is six times India’s.
Ironically, these pollution levels mean that as healthcare is meant to improve health, its emissions tend to offset much of that via diseases caused by global warming. ,
No Harm Aim
The challenge is that No Harm wants to get the healthcare industry in line with the 2050 goals of the Paris Agreement. That means net zero. As improved healthcare becomes available to more and more of the global population (which is not guaranteed) reaching this goal becomes close to impossible.
There is at least one thing that will help the healthcare millions problem. Most of the technology it uses has its own commitment to lower emissions. It is almost a matter of luck.
