10 Million Fish Killed Near Norway

In what appears to be a climate-related catastrophe, 10 million fish were killed in the ocean off the Norway coast. The tiny fishes killed were capelin, which were eaten by Atlantic cod.

According to Semafor, the capelin migrates from the Arctic ice sheet. “There are billions, which sustain many predator species. But overfishing and shrinking ice sheets are leaving them vulnerable.”

This is another example of the effects of the melting of the Arctic. Gemini reports, “According to current data, the Arctic sea ice is melting at a rate of roughly 12-13% per decade based on satellite observations, with the most significant decline occurring during the summer months, particularly in September when the ice extent is at its lowest.”

Melting Ice, Rising Seawater

Melting has many side effects. One is that it contributes to rising seawater. Another is that it makes water colder than in the past in areas immediately adjacent to the ice.

The melting has also allowed ships to pass across the Arctic, shortening sea routes and saving time and money, but it is an example of what has become an environmental disaster.
