“Doomsday Clock” Moves Closer To Midnight On Climate Worry
The “Doomsday Clock”, which signals the end of humanity when it hits midnight, is only 89 seconds from the milestone. That is the closest it has ever been. It has been 90 seconds away for the previous two years.
The clock was founded in 1945 by Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project. According to The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists who changed the measurements, “The Clock has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to global catastrophe caused by man-made technologies.”
Climate has become among the primary threats according to the group. It is added to the nuclear holocaust, and misuse of technology, AI was not specifically mentioned.
Middle East Conflict
Ukraine and the Middle East offer the threat of nuclear warfare. “In regard to nuclear risk, the war in Ukraine, now in its third year, looms over the world; the conflict could become nuclear at any moment because of a rash decision or through accident or miscalculation.”
Rising Seas
On the climate front, sea-levels rise, surface temperature topped previous records. The authors pointed out global greenhouse gas emissions have worsened. And, just recently climate change-influenced events—floods, tropical cyclones, heat waves, drought, and wildfires became more violent and frequent.
Even if the Doomsday Clock is just a clever way to point out humanity’s trouble, its observations about climate change are unsettling.
