“The degradation of the world’s soils and landscapes is threatening human life, and must be addressed as a matter of urgency, the government of Saudi Arabia has said,” according to The Guardian.

Not only odd, but old news. Mismanagement of land, particularly that ravaged by drought, has caused tens of thousands of deaths in Africa and triggered a migration of over a million people.
The price tag due to the deteriorating land is trillions of dollars, including food production loss due to drought and floods. This, in turn, threatens people in the affected region with malnutrition and starvation. Though the source is somewhat weird, the Saudi government is correct in suggesting that “land management” can reverse or at least stop the problem from spreading.
But it’s not the only thing that needs to be done. As usual, with environmental disasters spreading across a large part of the world and affecting several nations, logistics and costs play a significant role in potential solutions. Money promised to emerging nations by developed countries is already slow in being distributed or not provided at all.
