Florida’s Nightmare Miracle –Most Important Environment News 6.13.24

Climate change-driven weather hit Florida, likely causing expensive damage and higher residential insurance rates. Storms dropped as much as a foot on parts of the state, in some cases at the rate of several inches per hour. Notably, while rain levels hit records, they were not caused by hurricanes, which is highly unusual. Climatecrisis247 believes climate change-based activity no longer follows traditional patterns, making the climate crisis more dangerous and costly. One other recent example happened half the way around the world when, in April, the desert city of Kuwait was flooded by massive, unprecedented storms.

Pollution News –Most Polluted Beach In America
Russia’s war with Ukraine has caused tremendous air pollution. According to The Guardian, “The climate cost of the first two years of Russia’s war on Ukraine was greater than the annual greenhouse gas emissions generated individually by 175 countries, exacerbating the global climate emergency in addition to the mounting death toll and widespread destruction, research reveals.” Climatecrisis247 believes that, while this number is high, it is part of a huge amount of pollution caused by military activity worldwide. According to The Atlantic, “The U.S. Department of Defense puts its own emissions at 51 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in fiscal year 2021, which was roughly the same as the emissions produced by Sweden.”
The Battle Over Climate Funding
The world’s nations cannot agree on how much they should invest in slowing climate change. Reuters reports, “With just five months to go before this year’s U.N. climate summit, countries cannot agree on the size of a global funding bill to help the developing world fight climate change—let alone how to split it.” Some of this capital would go to underdeveloped countries, which cannot fund combating climate change, and some would go to slowing climate emissions in the developed world. Climatecrisis247 believes that this is an ongoing and probably permanent problem. Due to the availability of funds and differing political support for climate action, which varies from nation to nation, coming to a global consensus is nearly impossible.
Death Rate From AIr Pollution Soars
According to a new study by Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, air pollution has killed 135 million people in the last four decades, about 98 million in Asia. According to the authors, “In the study, premature deaths refer to fatalities that occur earlier than expected based on average life expectancy, resulting from preventable or treatable causes such as diseases or environmental factors.” Climatecrisis247 believes that more studies will indicate that the damage the climate crisis has done to the world’s population will continue to show the health effects and deaths, and pollution will continue to grow. These numbers have almost certainly been underestimated in the past.
