Buffalo is pitching itself as that great climate refuge. Detroit is already on most people’s lists. Either way, the argument is that each has a temperate climate, abundant water, and rarely suffers through violent storms. Neither is it technically a big American city.

Rarely mentioned is that both cities have had sharp population drops because of the drop in Midwest industrial prowess that ran from before WWII until the 1980s. That means a low cost of living.

Inside Climate News says that Buffalo is actually testing what happens which it pitches itself as an alternative to places like Miami, New Orleans, or Phoenix. It points to a Harvard study that says some cities in these areas are good for “climigration.”

Rep. Tim Kennedy told Inside Climate News, “Because of our position on Lake Erie, we have become a climate refuge. As we see increased temperatures as a regular part of life, more people are looking to Buffalo to find their homes, recognizing that Lake Erie is a natural air conditioner.” He did not mention that this and lake effect snow were a major drawback

Several other experts said people would be better off slightly inland. That would take them toward Syracuse. It may be among the safest places to live as the climate becomes more unstable and dangerous.

The problem with Buffalo, Syracuse, and Detroit is still that no one wants to live there.
