Oil Companies Have Severe Legal Trouble
A Montana appeals court upheld a ruling that the state had not done an adequate job of stopping the damage of fossil fuels to the environment. In many cases, they are aimed directly at the oil companies and claim they know about the damage they do decades ago.

Semafor states, “The decision in Held v. Montana also directs state agencies to consider greenhouse gas emissions from proposed development projects.” The publication also states that the law might allow similar filings in other states, including New York and Rhode Island.
The Power Of State Laws
So, fossil fuel companies are being hit on two fronts. First, some states will be told they must do more to reduce pollution. Their only option is to sue companies that will not comply with environmental laws.
The second fossil fuel challenge may be more difficult. These are suits directly against the companies. They say that these firms not only hurt the environment today but have done so for decades and were aware of the harm they caused.
