Over 700 Wildfires Burning In Canada

Large American cities are suffering from thick smoke the likes of which have not been seen since the 1970s when the US put clear air acts into effect. One day recently, Detroit had the third worst air quality of any city in the world. These cities are caught between huge wildfires in California and the Grand Canyon and a large number in Canada where the count is over 700. This may be the future of summers in America.

The Dragon Bravo fire in the Grand Canyon has eaten over 130,000 acres. The Gifford wildfire in California is the largest for the year at 82.000 and growing. Each is sending smoke to the East because of high winds.

There are over 700 wildfires in Canada. According to The Guardian, over 60% of these are out of control. That means it will take weeks to contain most of them. There will be new fires in the meantime, brought on by drought.

East Coast Cities

Midwestern cities are bracketed by smoke from west and north. East Coast cities have air quality warnings which are getting close to the dangerous air quality levels of two years ago.

There is a human and financial cost to these. First, they sicken thousands or more people. Emergency rooms overflow and with theme hospitals. Many of these people do not have insurance.

Heavy air pollution partially shuts down industries like construction. America’s summers have a new environmental problem that won’t go away.
