In a massive blow, Consumer Report’s new 2025 Automotive Report Card has ranked EV brand Rivian in last place based on reliability. The findings from the much-respected magazine are a stunning setback to the troubled maker of EV pickups and SUVs, which delivered only 10,018 vehicles in the third quarter.

The CR scores are based on 1) new car reliability, 2) used car reliability, 3) owner satisfaction, 4) road test score, and 5) maintenance and repair costs. On a 0 to 100 scale, Rivian scored 14 (the No.1 brand being Subaru, with a score of 68). Rivian also scored well below the next worst-rated car brand, GM’s Cadillac, which had a score of 27.

The study authors wrote that “Rivian is dead last. Its R1T and R1S EVs both score well below average. R1T owners told CR about issues with the EV battery, EV charging, climate system, brakes, body hardware, electrical accessories, paint and trim, noises and leaks, and in-car electronics.”

The news comes as the U.S. EV market has suffered from poor sales for the last year, with potential buyers remaining concerned about relatively high, of battery range, charging times, the number of charging stations, tire wear and poor charging in cold weather.

Rivian also has the challenge of competing with much larger companies, including Tesla, which has an EV pickup, the Cybertruck, and GM and Ford, each of which has an EV pickup.

Meanwhile, except for Tesla, car companies are losing money on EVs. In the most recent quarter, Ford lost over $100,000 for each EV it sold.

Rivian is already struggling to survive. It can’t afford poor reviews of its vehicles.
