As the ice melts in the Arctic Circle, it has begun to act as a sea lane. This may even help container ships avoid the Panama and Suez Canals. The savings could be into the hundreds of millions of dollars in shipping costs.
The ice is not melted all year, and not entirely melted in the summers, so icebreakers have become an important tool. Axios writes, “One appealing feature of icebreakers for countries rushing to acquire more of them is that they’re multi-purpose. They can keep harbors open and clear ice patches.”
Russians Control
There is a battle for the top of the world in terms of ice and military bases. The Russians hold the strongest hand. Northern EU nations have taken positions with small ports. The same is true of Canada.
One reason the US may want Greenland (which is a joke) is to have a position in the far north, which would include a number of bases. Without them, America has no way to defend a strategically important part of the world. And, it may not be able to use the areas as a place where commercial ships can transit
