Some US EVs May Never Be Repaired

Nilola has sold several hundred hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks (Granted, they are not EVs in the truest sense). It just went bankrupt. Fisker also sold several hundred “Oceans,” the name for its product. A lease company bought Fisker’s inventory for as little as $2,500 after it went under. An EV van company, Canoo, also fell apart. Who will repair the vehicles they sell? No one knows for sure.
*The Future Of EVs In America
The New York Times calls these orphaned vehicles zombie cars. It gives an example of China’s Hozon vehicles. “With dealerships and after-sales service shuttered, some owners are now looking to unauthorized repair shops for help.”
American EV Companies Gone
Could the same problems emerge for small American EV companies? Perhaps. Lucid and Rivian’s futures are uncertain. Each has funding but also loses hundreds of millions of dollars a year. VW has helped fund Rivian, but VW has its deep problems. The Saudi government has put money into Lucid, but future investments are uncertain.
The only way for EV buyers to have confidence in EV repairs today is through purchases of Tesla or EVs made by huge legacy companies like Ford, GM, and Hyundai.
Missing Gas Powered Brands
The situation is not unlike that of gas-powered cars in the mid-1900s, including Desoto and Packard. In many cases, getting them repaired became a challenge.
