This State Has The Cheapest Gas In America
Brought on by the Iran war and the Strait of Hormuz blockade, oil prices have risen above $100 a barrel. Gas prices nationwide in the US are $3.94 per gallon for regular. A month ago, the price was $2.93. The state with the worst figure is California, at $5.76. The other state above $5 is Washington at $5.27. Between them, the two states make up 14% of the nation’s population.
America is paying the price of not being Norway. Globally, 22% of all vehicles sold in 2024 were EVs. In Norway, the figure was 92% according to the International Energy Agency. (Ironically, Norway is one of the most oil-rich nations in the world.) The EV sales rate for new cars compared to all cars sold in the US in 2024 was about 5%.
US oil prices are made up of three components. One is global oil prices; another is proximity to refineries, the largest of which are south of Houston on the Gulf of America. The final is state taxes. Oklahoma has the lowest prices today among all states at $3.26. In some parts of the state, they are as low as $3.06. Other states with very low gas prices include Alabama, Mississippi, and Kansas, all of which are close to South Texas.
Oklahoma has another advantage. The average state tax in the US is just below $.45 a gallon. In Oklahoma, it is $.20. It is no accident that in California, it is $.71, which is among the reasons tax prices are so high there.
Unfortunately, EV sales are dropping in America. Gas prices may change that. There is apparently a rush to buy EVs, particularly used ones, which are therefore affordable. The rush comes too late for most Americans.
