The meteorological summer begins with the month of June in the United States, and two weeks into the season, the summer of 2026 has already brought blistering heat to much of the country. According to local data compiled by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, more than 380 daily heat records have been either matched or broken so far this month.

Weather stations across parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas, and Wyoming have reported temperatures exceeding 100°F in the first half of June. On Sunday, June 7th in Homestead, Florida, mercury hit 109°F, the highest temperature ever recorded in the weather station’s 36 year history, and 9°F higher than the previous local record.

The record-breaking heat has not been the only story in June 2026, however. In the last two weeks, parts of the Western United States have reported unusually cold weather. In many cases, temperatures have fallen below freezing – hitting lows never before seen in the month of June.

Using data from NOAA’s Daily Weather Records program, Climate Crisis 247 identified the places where freezing temperatures have broken historic June records. We ranked all weather stations on the lowest June temperatures ever recorded, and identified those where new records were set between June 1 and June 12, 2026. Only places where record breaking temperatures were 32°F or less were considered. All supplemental data is also from NOAA.

Among the places on this list, new monthly temperature lows range from 30°F down to just 17°F, and are anywhere from 27°F to 35°F lower than the local June average.
