Massive storms and heat waves have marched across the country. Temperatures of over 110 degrees F hit Las Vegas and Phoenix. Hurricane Beryl caused electrical outages that affected over one million people. The heat and storms reached the East Coast, and the heat index reached above 100 degrees in New York City. Local utility Con Ed asked people to lower their electricity use in the afternoons for three days. Storms also dumped rain from New York to Maine.

Another byproduct was that a rock concert by the Foo Fighters was cut short by strong thunderstorms, enraging concertgoers. According to The New York Post, one person said, “I was robbed.” The paper reported, “Unfortunately due to the continued presence of lightning in the area, tonight’s show has concluded. Please exit the venue and have a safe night,” the stadium’s official X account posted at 10:33 p.m. People in New York have asked to cut electricity use.

This will happen more often at outdoor venues for concerts and sports. The most well-known incident involving weather and human risks was a Taylor Swift concert in Brazil last November. A woman died from the heat as temperatures in the stadium reached 140 degrees F.

The most recent example of weather and cancellation of outdoor events may be at the Olympics in Paris. NBC said as many as five competitions could be canceled–archery, cycling, the triathlon, sailing, and surfing. Heat at the Olympics may kill people.

As the weather gets more violent, these cancellations will rise.
