Wildfires Become More Wild

Wildfires have gotten significantly more frequent and more dangerous since 2015. This is the conclusion from a new study titled “Climate-linked escalation of societally disastrous wildfires”, published in Science. The study looks at these events between 1980 and 2023.
The locations of these highly destructive fires tend to be in both urban and natural areas, so population density does not appear to be a significant factor. They do tend to occur in “conifer regions,” which today include southern Europe and the western US. Each of these areas has had a massive wildfire in 2025.
Danger To Humans
Fires across vast forests and brushlands do not pose a significant danger to humans. However, these are happening more frequently in areas surrounding large cities. This also means they have become more financially destructive.
The authors primarily blame drought and extremely hot weather, both of which they claim have worsened due to climate change.
Finally, as is the case with these studies, they suggest that man-made solutions are the best way to address man-made problems. This includes better land management and better fire prevention tactics.
