Big problems for the Great Lakes: Drought Threatens Water Supply for 30 Million

A drought on the Great Lakes is causing water levels to drop by two to eight inches below average, posing risks to the water supply for nearly 30 million people. The unusually dry September, coupled with typical seasonal declines, is worsening the situation. In addition, the low levels significantly impact shipping routes, with vessels traveling from the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Great Lakes encountering challenges in navigating shallow areas, particularly near Detroit.
