Global Plastics Treaty Falls Apart
Douglas McIntyre, Editor-in-Chief at Climate Crisis 24/7, reports that a global summit involving 184 countries has resumed in Geneva to negotiate a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution. However, talks have stalled over a fundamental disagreement: whether to limit plastic production. While most nations—especially in the Global South—support production limits, fossil fuel–producing countries and the petrochemical industry favor focusing only on waste management. McIntyre emphasizes that U.S. opposition, driven by its powerful petrochemical sector, is a major roadblock to progress.
