Dangerous Storms Race Toward East Coast, Financial Risk Rises

Much of the East Coast will experience major rain storms in the next day or two. These storms will cause floods, and more importantly, flash flooding will endanger both lives and property.  Property damage can run into millions of dollars, damaging or shuttering businesses.

Accuweather says, “Storms capable of causing disruptive torrential downpours, gusty winds and small hail will extend from southeastern Virginia to much of the Florida Panhandle and the northeastern part of the Florida Peninsula.”

In southern New Jersey, areas just north of this were hit by wildfires last week.

A recent study of eight states in the middle of the US showed that climate change strengthened storms. Another showed that storms were more likely to be slow-moving because of warm air from the Gulf of Mexico.

It will be a year or more before there is evidence that climate change causes violent storms along the East Coast. The smart money will bet “yes.”
