Hail Size Gets Much Bigger

The size of hail has grown by as much as 75% between the middle of the 20th Century to the end of the 21st Century. According to a paper in the journal Nature, “Near-surface hailstones <4 cm are found to decrease in frequency by an average of 25%, whereas the largest stones are found to increase by 15–75% depending on the greenhouse gas emissions pathway.”

The study has a profound effect on what is likely to be a larger amount of destruction in some parts of the US. Insurance rates have started to rise in some of these areas.

As is the case with parts of Florida which have been battered by hurricanes and parts of California and Oregon which have been hit by wildfires, residential areas will be come uninsurable as insurance companies leave the areas.
