According to the FT, “The India Meteorological Department expects 10 to 20 days of heatwaves between April and June — more than double the typical summer average of four to eight days.”
The CDC’s experts say “heat exhaustion” can trigger high body temperature (over 103 degrees F), nausea, confusion, and unconsciousness.
The Role Of Global Warming
This news points to one of the most challenging factors of global warming. Temperatures throughout the world can reach above 110 F in many areas. This is a particular problem in India, many parts of Africa, Pakistan, and the Middle East. Over two billion people live in those areas, although many do not face high temperatures.
The heat has moved to Europe, where temperatures have reached 100 degrees. The US has also faced significant and dangerous heat. The temperature in Phoenix was above 110 degrees F for 54 days last year.
The most challenging problem is that many people in India, particularly the poor, do not have air conditioning. Relocating them would be a massive expense, and even if it were possible, there would be nowhere for them to go. They are trapped in among the most dangerous spots in the world.
