Three-Inch Hail Threat

According to weather officials, a huge storm in the central US could dump three-inch hail on part of Kansas. According to NOAA, there were 6,962 hail events in the country last year. In the previous 20 years, hail damage has caused between $8 billion and $14 billion. It is another example of seemingly random and extreme weather events affecting property.

Tornados are also expected to hit much of the Midwest this week. Tornador season normally starts a month from now, but unseasonably warm weather has changed that, along with the destructive power of many of these. Tornado season in the northern tier of states runs from June through July. 

Large Hailstones

Large hail is particularly dangerous because, due to its weight, it can fall at a pace of 100 miles per hour. The largest hail can reach a size of five inches.

It is fair to assume that, like many other severe weather events, hail will occur more often and new temperature patterns will continue to increase the size of hailstones.
