World’s Biggest Iceberg Is In Trouble
The world’s largest iceberg, known as A23a is in trouble. It first broke off Antarctica in 1986 and began moving in 2020. According to Semafor, “The world’s largest iceberg, A23a, is trapped in the Antarctic Ocean on top of a huge rotating block of water, a phenomenon called a Taylor Column.”
Fluid Dynamics defines Taylor Column as “When rotating, fluids often act very differently than we expect. For example, an obstacle in a rotating flow will deflect flow around it at all heights.”
Apparently the current condition will keep the iceberg largely in place. That means it will not move north into warmer waters where it would likely begin to thaw and create massive amounts of water.
