Best Retirement Cities In Hurricane Alley–Miami, Tampa
A new list of the best places to retire shows that most are in Hurricane Alley, where Atlantic hurricanes tend to pass. A new Wallet Hub list shows five of the eight in Flordia. As hurricanes strengthen and their numbers increase, the cities are prone to destruction, rising insurance, and falling real estate prices.
The Wallet Hub list is based on affordability, activities, quality of life, and healthcare. The cities, of which there are 182, are rated on a 100-point scale. The authors noted: “It’s important to choose wisely when picking where to retire, as many retirees are on a fixed income. As a result, the best cities for retired people are those that minimize taxes and expenses and have good opportunities for retirees to continue paid work for extra income, if they choose to do so. In addition, the top cities provide high-quality health care and offer plenty of enjoyable activities for retirees.”
Amont the top eight cities were 1) Orlando, 2), Miami, 4) Tampa, 5) Fort Lauderdale, and 6) St Petersburg.
Insurance Prices
Each of these cities, except Orlando, is in an area hit by Atlantic hurricanes. Each has also been damaged by hurricanes in the last decade. Almost every major weather service and climate scientist believes Atlantic storms will intensify and grow in numbers.
Among the fallout from hurricanes are higher residential insurance rates, which eat away money from those on fixed incomes, and a drop in property values.
