Trump loves Data Centers, But These Are The Reasons Many Americans Object

The news is filled with headlines about Americans objecting to data centers, particularly when they’re built near people’s homes and communities. This backlash has started to affect elections at both the local and national level, and has become part of the platform for several candidates in the midterm elections.

Rising electricity bills

Data centers can draw as much power as a mid-sized city, according to NPR, and in several regions electricity prices have risen noticeably where demand remains high. This can be especially problematic in areas with heavy air conditioning use. Some regions have seen electricity prices jump directly in response to data center demand, Fox reports, with rate hikes hitting household bills — a trend that has prompted opposition from both political parties to oppose them.

Water consumption

Large-scale cooling systems could eventually use 17 billion gallons of water, competing with water use in areas already hit by long-term drought. Data centers can also cause pollution by adding chemicals like chlorine or bromine to water supplies, according to the University of Georgia.

Noise

Nearby residents often experience loud noise from data center facilities, sometimes described as “noise pollution.” As the Environmental and Energy Study Institute reports, “Data centers emit sounds from the humming of cooling systems, rumbling of diesel generators, and whirring of fans, which can be heard for hundreds of feet around them.”

Property values

Opponents have raised concerns that data centers lower property values for nearby homes. However, the NAR’s “2026 Data Center Impact” report says research shows this concern may be overstated.

General environmental impact

Researchers say data centers are “bad for the environment” in ways beyond water and power use. Land use is one concern; others include emissions from backup diesel generators and habitat damage for local wildlife. Research from the Yale School of Management supports the view that these impacts are real.

Strain on the power grid

Beyond electricity prices, there’s the issue of grid capacity itself. Some parts of America’s power grid are decades old, and capital isn’t readily available to upgrade them. The Conversation recently pointed out that AI’s growing appetite for power is putting “Pennsylvania’s aging electricity grid to the test” — a pattern playing out in other regions as well.

“Quality of life” concerns

This point of view is vague but largely accurate. Gallup recently conducted an extensive survey on the issue and found that “Seven in 10 Americans oppose constructing data centers for artificial intelligence in their local area, including nearly half, 48%, who are strongly opposed. Barely a quarter favor these projects, with 7% strongly in favor.”

Broader anxiety about AI

This concern extends well beyond local issues. Earlier this week, CBS reported that “a lead researcher at Anthropic, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence firms, said Wednesday that he believes there is a more than 10% chance AI ‘could kill all humans’ within the next decade.” While this may be an extreme estimate, there’s a broader worry that AI could eliminate jobs and undermine national GDP.

Concerns about whether data centers help or harm local communities

If data centers are concentrated in certain areas, will they draw jobs and investment from one city or region to another? Will the financial benefits end up distributed unevenly across the country?
