Exxon Tops Pollution List, Followed By Chevron

Carbon Majors has released its report for 2024. The opening point of its executive summary was “The CO2 emissions in the database accounted for 78.4% of global fossil fuel and cement CO2 emissions in 2023, with just 36 companies linked to over half of these global emissions.”
Among the “investor-owned” companies on the list was Exxon Mobile, which had 1.3% of all global CO2 emissions. Chevron followed it at 1.1% and Shell at .9%.
Saudi Aramco
Among state-owned oil companies, Saudi Aramco ranked first, at 4.4%. It recently posted disappointing earnings and cut its dividend. India Coal ranked second, at 3.7%.
The authors noted, “The Carbon Majors are keeping the world hooked on fossil fuels with no plans to slow production.” Production will increase in pace if the US is an example. In December, the US produced the most oil of any nation in any month in history. This was before President Trump was able to initiate his plans to “drill, baby drill.”
OPEC+
OPEC+ has just announced its plans to increase production starting in April. The nations include the Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, Indonesia, Libya, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Nigeria, Ecuador, Gabon, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and Congo. OPEC+ also includes Russia. Sanctions have limited its exports, but it can still get crude to India and China.
Exxon, which once struggled with limitations on its US drilling, no longer faces that challenge to any great extent.
