Tesla Cybertruck Outsells Ford Lightning
In a race for the top spot in the pickup EV market in the US, Tesla’s Cybertruck has pulled ahead of the Ford F-150 Lighting, among the most disastrous launches in recent Ford history. Lightning’s issues have gone on for years. At one point, the vehicle’s MSRP was changed four times in a year. Bill Ford, the company’s executive chairman, said it was the most crucial car launch during his tenure as an employee. Ford also faces concerns about China’s EVs.
The Lightning should have been an enormous success. The gas-powered F-150 has been the top-selling vehicle for four decades, but Ford is lucky to sell a few thousand EV versions in any given month. Cadillac has entered the market with a massive SUV.
The lighting is a symptom of Ford’s overall EV failure. At one point, Ford said it would invest $30 billion in EVs. CEO Jim Farley said Ford’s EV production rate would be 600,000 by the end of last year. Ford never came close. It has started to move back toward the manufacturing of gas-powered engines while it waits for the flagging EV market to improve.
Tesla has had a problem with the Cybertruck. The Lightning is a rolling disaster.
