The No.1 Reason People Won’t Buy EVs

EV sales have been soft in the US for over a year. In Europe, sales have fallen. A phase-out of EV purchase credits may slow the growth of China’s world’s largest market. EVs still have to overcome several barriers to drive adoption. According to widely regarded car research company JD Power, the most significant problem is the lack of public chargers.

Even with a growing number of public chargers, progress is insufficient. “In the fourth quarter of 2024, 20% of EV drivers who visited public charging stations were unable to charge their vehicles due to a range of issues from station outages and equipment malfunctions to long wait times and payment failures,” the report said.
Public Chargers
51% mentioned public chargers as a problem. This was followed by the time required to charge at 49% and limited driving distance per charge at 47%. Part of the charger-driven reluctance appears to be based on “perception” since most EV owners charge their cars at home.
The report concluded, “Until manufacturers, charge point operators, utilities, and other EV stakeholders address these lingering concerns, negative public perception of the public charging network will continue to be a headwind to EV adoption.”
Cold Weather Charges
Among the issues that remain as reasons people do not buy EVs are excessive tire wear compared to gas-powered cars and the fact that batteries do not take a full charge in cold weather.
Finally, as the US drops the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchases, the challenges to EV adoption continue to grow.
