US Needs 23 Million EV Charging Ports

About 2% of the vehicles on America’s roads are EVs. Before the end of the $7,500 tax credit, about 7% of all new cars sold in the US were EVs. When the tax benefit is gone, that number will drop. Despite all of this, one study shows that the US will need 25 million EV charging ports to reach the goal of becoming a more EV-friendly country.Â
Just over a year ago, The Department of Energy made its forecast based on a total 32 to 40 million EVs in operation. That number, as of total, is absurd. It may have been a goal three or four years ago, but recent sales results show that the future may be no more than half of that.Â
The numbers come from a study titled, Building the 2030 National Charging Network.” Based on the information available then and questionable forecasts. “The 2030 National Charging Network report finds that to support a mid-adoption scenario of 33 million EVs on the road by 2030, the nation will need 28 million charging ports.”
Most Chargers At Home
Many of these will be in homes. However,in addition, “there will need to be complemented with reliable public fast charging.” The study does not say for certain where these will come from.
When the study was released, Joe Biden was still the President. Under his Administration, the plan was that 50% of all vehicles sold in the US in 2030 would be EVs. The $7.500 EV tax credit was a cornerstone of expected adoption.
The Trump Administration is not going to pay for any charging stations. Based on the trajectory of EV sales, institutional money will not be invested either. The goal set in the study is impossible to reach.
