As a sprawling heat dome settles over much of the eastern and central U.S., more than two dozen major cities are now under official heat advisories. The National Weather Service issued extreme heat warnings in 492 counties – affecting more than 96 million Americans – and is warning of dangerous temperatures and oppressive humidity that could last through the end of the week, threatening power grids, straining public health systems, and pushing some cities to the brink of their historical heat records.

Several major cities are forecast to break daily heat records, with a handful of smaller cities projected to experience triple-digit temperatures for the first time in recorded history. Extreme heat is also exacerbating harmful ozone concentrations, prompting the NWS to issue air quality alerts in 164 counties. A closer look at the data reveals the major cities under heat warnings right now.

To determine the major cities currently under heat advisory, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed extreme heat warnings and advisories from the National Weather Service as of June 23, 2025. Cities under current extreme heat warnings and advisories were ranked based on population. Supplemental data on forecast maximum temperature and record temperatures are from the NOAA’s National Digital Forecast Database and Global Historical Climatology Network programs. Supplemental data on population are from the U.S. Census Bureau.
