These Vacation Hotspots Have Some of The Worst Ozone Levels in the US This Week

This week, an unusual zag in the jet stream is bringing an early season heat dome to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, trapping hot, still air in dozens of major metropolitan areas. The National Weather Service issued extreme heat warnings in 492 counties, affecting more than one in four Americans.

Extreme heat can exacerbate air pollution and cause harmful ozone concentration levels to spike. The problem is compounded by vehicle traffic, which causes ozone to form when nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds interact. The heat wave is hitting just as millions of Americans are flocking to the mountains and beach for summer vacation, pushing ozone levels to dangerous highs. While cities like Los Angeles and Phoenix typically lead the nation in poor air quality, this week places like Cape Cod, Newport, and the Hamptons will have the highest ozone concentration levels in the country. Many summer hotspots are projected to have ozone levels well above the EPA’s threshold of 70 parts per billion for healthy air. A closer look at the data reveals the cities where unhealthy ozone levels will pose the greatest danger this week.

To determine the cities with the worst ozone levels this week, Climate Crisis 247 reviewed data on forecast ozone concentrations from the National Digital Forecast Database of the NOAA. Cities were ranked based on the average forecast ozone concentration levels – in parts per billion – for the period June 23 to June 25. Supplemental data on maximum temperatures are also from NOAA’s NDFD. Raster data were averaged across city boundaries using Census Bureau place definitions. Only cities with at least 5,000 residents were considered. Population data is from the U.S. Census Bureau.
