The hottest place in the world today is Siteki, Eswatini, where it is 114 degrees.  Siteki is a town of about 6,000 in the landlocked nation of Eswatini, which is east of Johannesburg and just west of Maputo, the capital of  Mozambique.

Broader problems: World’s Population Hit 8 Billion As Planet Boils

Siteki is part of a heatwave covering Botswana and South Africa. Temperatures well above 100 degrees daily have plagued Johannesburg for a month and will continue. According to AfricaNews,” Local weather experts have issued a warning that the intense heat is likely to persist for more months, prompting authorities to advise people to avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 and 15:00.” As is true from India to Phoenix, laborers will struggle in the heat, despite the warning. The article’s author made a point of writing that greenhouse gases and the El Nino effect have caused much of the problem and are likely to worsen it.

As is the case with the areas around Eswatini, temperatures can be extremely high during the day from December through March.

Eswatini is remarkably poor, so the government can do nothing to help its residents during periods of extreme heat. The nation has 1.2 million residents. According to The World Bank, the poverty rate in the country is 63%. Life expectancy is 57 years, among the world’s lowest. GDP per capita is an extremely low $4,000.  The World Bank experts wrote in its report on the country, “Despite some progress, Eswatini continues to experience high and persistent poverty.”

Eswatini is another country under siege by the effects of climate change and with a population that cannot do anything about it.
