It’s 115 degrees F at Halls Creek Airport in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The region is south of the Indian Ocean and north of the Great Sandy and Tanami deserts. The airport lists local wildlife and birds as takeoff and landing hazards. The airport is remote.  Several other towns and cities nearby have temperatures of 110 degrees F today.

A forecast: 2024 could be the hottest year in history

Recent news: Atlantic hurricane season posts a record.

There have been heatwave warnings in the part of Australia for several days. Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, the area around Halls Creek Airport has what is known as the most serious heat level–” extreme heatwave.”

A heatwave has hit much of Australia, starting with hot weather and warnings two weeks ago. In the early part of the period, the near-record heat went as far east as Sydney.

The temperature in Halls Creek Airport is not usually very high this time of year. In December 2022, daily highs rarely rose above 85 degrees F. December also tends to be very dry.

Because Halls Creek Airport is south of the Indian Ocean, it is sometimes hit by cyclones between December and March. Arid weather can turn into terrific rainstorms briefly. The winds from the cyclones can hit 0- MPH.

The heat can make the environment dangerous for humans. At the high end, the heat in Telfer can cause heat stroke for anyone exposed to 120 degrees F for even a short period. Heatstroke happens when the body’s core temperature hits 104 degrees F. The effect can cause damage to organs, including the brain and heart.
