It is 109 degrees in the hottest place in the world today. Burketown Airport is on the northern coast of Australia, in Queenstown, on the Gulf of Carpenparia. In several areas nearby, the temperatures are nearly as high. All of the 12 hottest areas in the world today are in northern Australia, according to El Dorado Weather.
The heat extends down the East Coast of Australia to the nation’s largest city. According to The Guardian, “Temperatures hit 43.5C at Sydney airport on Saturday. This was the highest temperature recorded at this station since records began in 1929, and is about 15C above the December average.” That translates into 110 degrees F. The reason given for the heat is global warming.
Farm Online weather data show that the mean high temperature is in the mid-90s. It remains at about that level through the first three months of every year.
The weather has triggered a large number of wildfires that have accompanied the heat. South of Sydney, thunderstorms and floods are the worst they have been in several decades. CBBC reports, “Altogether, the state of South Australia saw more than 20,000 lightning strikes, and 30,000 homes and businesses were left without power.”
The weather across Australia is more dangerous than ever in history, by many accounts. Heat in the north has made the areas almost unlivable recently, and there is reason to think that will continue to worsen.
