It’s 117 degrees F in Yelimane (Mali), a town located in the west of the landlocked African nation near the border with Mauritania.

Mali has been described as the “hottest country in the world.” The Mirror reports, “Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa where locals are forced to endure year-long averages of 37C and fatal highs of 48C, which can kill if not treated with adequate rest, water, shade and electrolyte replacement.”

Hottest Country In The World?

The Climate Knowledge Portal reports that much of the nation will be uninhabitable by the later part of the century. At the current pace of global warming, that could come much sooner. Among the challenges is that there is no place to which residents can migrate. The nation is too poor to provide air conditioning across a vast area.

Mali has a population of 21 million. The World Factbook forecasts this figure will double by 2035.

Residents of Mali have among the shortest life expectancies of any nation in the world at 63 years. GDP per capita at $2,100 is among the lowest in the world.
