Americans Continue To Move To States With Dangerous Climate
Despite the high odds of dangerous weather, particularly hurricanes, the net migration to Texas and southern states rose again in 2023.
Texas topped the list of states with a net positive migration of 138,000. It was followed closely by Florida at 137,000. These were followed by North Carolina (up 111,000), South Carolina (up 72,000), and Georgia (up 82,000) and Arizona (up 57,000).

A look at a chart of Atlantic hurricanes in the 2024 season shows the risks of living in Texas and each of the southern states. Parts of Texas, particularly Houston, were savaged by Hurricane Beryl which hit a Category 5 level when it hit Mexico before moving toward Texas..
Hurricane Milton and Helene wrecked part of the Gulf Coast of Florida. It then did a great deal of damage in Florida and hammered parts of western North Carolina.
Among the challenges residents of these southern states face is that insurance companies have raised residential rates sharply and in some cases do not offer coverage at all. This tends to drive the costs of owning a home up. People with no insurance cannot get mortgages
It’s Hot In Phoenix
Arizona has become so hot during parts of the year that it is barely habitable. Phoenix had 100 consecutive days when temperatures rose above 100 degrees F. Energy costs to run air conditions have become expensive, and in some cases prohibitively high
At some point, people will start to move north again.
