Hyundai Is Most Dangerous EV For Winter

Based on new research, the most dangerous EV to drive in the winter is the Hyundai Ioniq. This is based on the crashes per 10,000 cars sold.
“The Hyundai Ioniq recorded the highest number of crashes in relation to its ownership, with 32 crashes per 10K cars reported during a three-year period. It also has the lowest battery capacity at 38 kWh, which limits its driving range in cold conditions,” the authors wrote. It also loses 30% of its maximum battery power in the cold.

The Ioniq was followed by the Kia Niro with 27.5 crashes per 10,000 sold and the Hyundai Kona at 25.7.
Another metric the study measures is how much of a batter charge a model loses in cold weather. This is considered a major drawback to potential EV buyers and may be one of the reasons EV adoption has been slow, particularly in the northern states. Based on per state numbers, California leads with 3,026 EVs per registered 100,000 vehicles. In states which are usually hit with cold weather in the winter, the figure is usually below 600. As an example, the figure is 373 in Montana and 489 in Maine.
Tesla Rating
The charging level in the winter is only 55% for the Tesla Model S. It is only 50% for the Tesla Model 3, and 52% for the Tesla Model X,
EV adoption has been hampered by low range on a single charge, a lack of charging stations, and high levels of tire wear compared to gas powered cars. Now, potential buyers need to look at the percent an EV battery changes. Gas powered cars don’t have that issue.
