According to scientists, landslides are collapsing homes along the coast and pushing parts of some neighborhoods into the water. Rain and mudslides, which occur almost every year, will make the problem worse.

*Rain Across The Country

*15 Inches In California

*Four Trillion Gallons Of Rain

The New York Times reports, “New data from a NASA plane shows the widening threat of these slow-moving landslides, which have destabilized homes, businesses, and infrastructure like roads and utilities.” Part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula have “slid” at the rate of four inches per week.

Pacific Rains

Most years, the heavy rain that comes off the Pacific originates west of Hawaii. Because of climate change, it becomes more intense each year. That means that the problem could extend to other areas along the same coast.

The California Department of Conservation provides a landslide database. Among the illustrations the database uses is a “rockslide on California State Route 70 in the Feather River Canyon, Butte/Plumas county line, northern California.” It shows a large road collapsed entirely into the water.

Time Problems

One thing is certain: This problem will grow larger over time, and fixing it will require tens of millions of dollars.
