California Faces 15 Inches Of Rain, Major Financial Losses

Northern California will be hit with 15 inches of rain, which will cause significant property damage and as much as several hundred million dollars in financial losses.
*Rain Damage
“Flood watches were in effect for a good portion of Northern California on Saturday and were expected to continue through the weekend and potentially early next week,” The New York Times reports. There is likely to be several inches of snow in the mountains east of the coast.
Northern California is fortunate that it is not dealing with heavy rains after wildfires have started to happen in Los Angles. The root of many trees and bushes which hold earth in place during storms have been destroyed. This has, and will cause dangerous and expensive mudslides.
It Starts In Hawaii
The rain is part of an atmospheric river that is formed as far west as Hawaii. It is a double edged sword. Much of California has been suffering from drought. Heavy rain solves that problem, at least temporarily.
Weather patterns in the Pacific have been disrupted enough so that it is impossible to say whether the rain will come year after year.
