Cities With the Most Record Highs in 2025
New data shows that the continuing effects of climate change were on full display in 2025. According to recently released analysis from World Weather Attribution researchers, 2025 will likely rank among the three hottest years on record. Due in part to last year’s heat, the three-year average temperature exceeded the global pre-industrial average by more than 2.7°F, a threshold established in the 2015 Paris Agreement, for the first time ever.
Over the course of 2025, WWA researchers also identified 157 of the most severe extreme weather events around the world. The deadliest of these events were heatwaves, some of which were determined to be 10 times as likely as they would have been only a decade earlier because of climate change.
In the United States, average regional temperatures during the first half of 2025 exceeded the baseline average, recorded between 1901 and 2000, by anywhere from 1.7°F to 2.5°F, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Between July and November, temperatures exceeded 20th century averages by 1.5°F in the East, 2.6°F in the South, and 3.0°F in the Central United States. Over the same period, the Western U.S. reported an average temperature of 61.6°F, topping the baseline average by 3.4°F, and making that five month stretch in 2025 the warmest of any year in the region’s history.
Indeed, hundreds of cities across the United States reported new all-time high temperatures over the course of 2025. A recent report from the independent non-profit research organization Climate Central, which analyzed temperature data from January through November 2025, found that 235 of the 247 cities studied reported at least one new daily record high in the first 11 months of last year. Several of these cities reported over a dozen days of record-breaking temperatures across multiple seasons.
Using data from Climate Central, Climate Crisis 247 identified the U.S. cities that reported the most new, daily record-highs in 2025. Only the 10 cities included in the study with at least 15 days of record-breaking heat for a given day are included. Supplemental data on new record high temperatures, and when they were reported, are also from Climate Crisis. The share of new local daily highs in 2025 for which human-caused climate change was likely a factor was determined using Climate Crisis’ Climate Shift Index.
The cities on this list span five states: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, and Texas. Collectively, these 10 cities alone reported a total of 175 new record daily highs in 2025. In all but two of these places, record-breaking heat pushed the mercury into the triple-digits last year.
