Depending on where someone lives in the country, a climate safe room could protect against floods, tornados, extreme heat, or fires. Given the geographic spread of these, many Americans are installing areas in or near their homes where they can live during a weather catastrophe.

The costs of these safe rooms vary by size and materials used. Some are above ground, others below ground, some attached to homes, and others stand alone. Depending on the potentially dangerous weather, some have hardened concrete walls, and others have air conditioning technology. Some have energy and water access. Others run on solar energy, and water is stored inside. Some are built as bunkers.

Most climate-safe rooms have several weeks’ worth of nonperishable food and water. They also have medical kits or facilities, and some have protection from intruders.

Wind And Fire

The costs of climate-safe rooms vary. On the higher end, they can cost more than $50,000.

Climate change has become a large enough problem that temperatures are often above 100 degrees F in places like Phoenix. In Florida, hurricanes can have 200 MPH. Wind from tornadoes in the country’s center can be twice that speed.

Heavy hail can do severe damage to homes and threaten injury. Floods occur along many large rivers.

Climate safety rooms are going to become a larger business.
