A new study shows that Chinese EV makers have gotten $231 billion in subsidies from the government since 2009. The paper from the Center for Strategic and International Studies is titled “The Chinese EV Dilemma: Subsidized Yet Striking.” reported, “Absolute funding annually was around $6.74 billion in the first 9 years of our analysis (2009-2017), as the sector was just getting off the ground. Spending roughly tripled during 2018-2020, and then has risen again sharply since 2021.” The author said the figures were conservative. Climatecrisis247 believes that this shows what governments in the US and EU have said as they have added tariffs on vehicle imports from China. These governments will view the report as justification for their actions. However, it does not solve the problem that consumers want less expensive EVs, and access to Chinese vehicles may be the only path to that–and the positive effects on the environment that EVs bring.

Next Big Climate Problem –The Challenges Of Migration

Upcoming elections in the EU, UK, and US could negatively affect regulation and legislation meant to improve the pace of climate change for the worse.  Ariel Moger, the government and political affairs director at Friends of the Earth Action, told Ajaeera, “The US plays such an outsized role in both international politics and also greenhouse gas emissions.” Climatecrisis247 believes that, accurate or not, there is a belief that Donald Trump will favor fossil fuel companies and dial back support for policies aimed at slowing climate change, such as support for EVs and alternative energy.

Climate Efforts Can Fail

Efforts meant to slow climate change in the Western US may hurt such efforts in Europe. According to The Guardian, “A geoengineering technique designed to reduce high temperatures in California could inadvertently intensify heatwaves in Europe, according to a study that models the unintended consequences of regional tinkering with a changing climate.” The authors add the work to help mitigate environmental problems with one population in a specific geographic area, which can hurt efforts in another. Climatecrisis247 believes that the study shows how little is known about the side effects of efforts to slow climate change in one part of the world without huge ripples that can extend to areas that are remote geographically.

A Victory For Fossil Fuels

The Energy Institute recently released a report titled “A year of record highs in an energy hungry world”, EI Statistical Review reveals.” The authors point out that “Global fossil fuel consumption reached a record high, up 1.5% (driven by coal up 1.6%, oil up 2% to above 100 million barrels for first time, while gas was flat). As a share of the overall mix they were at 81.5%, marginally down from 82% last year.”  Climatecrisis247 believes that energy from renewables has not risen enough to offset the need for fossil fuel consumption. Some oil company executives believe this will be true for over a decade. This fact will make slowing climate change all the more difficult.
