LA Flood Risk Triggers Evacuations

After a period of the most destructive wildfires in US history, LA faces powerful rainstorms, and officials have asked people to evaluate part of the metro area. The heavy rain could trigger dangerous mudslides, among other things.
According to CNN, “Incoming heavy rain from an atmospheric river-fueled storm that slammed into the West Coast early Wednesday is threatening mudslides and debris flows in Southern California and has already prompted evacuations in the Los Angeles area.” This storm, known as the Pineapple Express because it starts so far to the west of the US, has hit LA several times in the last decade
Wildfire Damage Before
One problem with the heavy rains is that wildfires have destroyed the roots of trees and bushes that would normally hold much of the soil in place. Without those, the likelihood of landslides is higher. These are a risk to residents and, in a few cases, human lives.
Worst Mudslide In History?
Among the most well-known catastrophes is the devastating mudslides in Montecito in January 2018. The mud and boulders broke a gas main. A total of 23 people died.
The storms about to hit the West Coast will affect the weather further inland. Tornados and large thunderstorms are expected in the lower Midwest.
