People Have Five Bottle Caps Of Plastic In Their Brains

It seems impossible. However, The New York Times reports, “Inside a New Mexico lab, researchers estimate there are five bottle caps worth of plastic in human brains.” The researcher points out that they still do not understand the effects.

Another research paper cited in the article, which ran in the journal Nature, titled “Bioaccumulation of microplastics in decedent human brains,” found that the amount of plastic in human brains rose 50% based on its sample from 2016 until last year.

Examing Bodies

Much of the work was based on the examination of dead bodies. One conclusion of the research groups was that “… for all the places they found microplastics, and all the concern about health risks, there was so much that the researchers still did not understand.”

The presence of microplastics in humans poses some danger. In Science Direct, in a paper titled “The potential impact of nano- and microplastics on human health: Understanding human health risks,” the authors found that “Exposure to nano- and microplastics in humans potentially leads to serious health issues, including various cancers, respiratory disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease.”

Human Vascular System

Other research shows microplastics can affect the vascular system.

Microplastics are found almost everywhere. Recently, researchers found they are over 10,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. Plastic water bottles are a primary source. Since many plastics do not degrade for decades or longer, the problem will only worsen.
